In this satirization of the shallow world of the Parisian haute couture industry of the ‘60s. Real-life model Dorothy McGowan stars in her only onscreen role as the enigmatic Polly Maggoo, the world’s most famous celebrity. A French camera crew follows Polly as she drifts between fashion shows and photoshoots in an attempt to understand the public’s fascination with her looks. Showcasing stunning black and white cinematography and bold Mod era fashions, this experimental mockumentary is a must-see for any fashion enthusiast. Also featuring Philadelphia native Grayson Hall, Jean Rochefort, Sami Frey, and a brief appearance from Delphine Seyrig. In French w/ subtitles.
About the Fashion: WHO ARE YOU, POLLY MAGGOO has both feet rooted in the ground of the ‘60s fashion world. Director William Klein got his start as a photographer at American VOGUE in the 1950s, witnessing the evolution in fashion design from the new look through the mod-era. His sharp eye, alongside the designing talents of his wife, costume designer and model Janine Klein, showcases the wildest looks of the Swingin’ Sixties in the film, featuring countless bold monochromatic designs made from both conventional and unconventional materials. This is a movie where the looks are more important than the plot; the thick eyelashes, over-the-top hairstyles, and avante-garde dresses transform this mockumentary into a captivating runway show. POLLY MAGGOO has influenced countless designers, most notably Marc Jacobs and Jean Paul Gaultier, who opened his final runway show in January 2020 with a clip from the film. It also features cameos from immortal fashion photographers Jeanloup Sieff, Richard Avedon, and Louis Faurer.
