Waiting for Guffman

19961 hr 24 minR

This ongoing series allows staff at the County Theater to pick and present their favorite films to our engaged community of cinephiles. Our screening of WAITING FOR GUFFMAN was selected and will be introduced by our longtime volunteer, Marne.

This hilariously deadpan mockumentary from the mind of Christopher Guest (This is Spinal Tap, Best in Show) follows the residents of Blaine, Missouri, preparing to put on an original musical performance for the town’s 150th anniversary. The only problem is that well-meaning performers are untalented, and the show’s eccentric director has invited a noteworthy Broadway critic to watch the production. Featuring a notable cast that includes Fred Willard, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, and Eugene Levy. Rated R.

Why it's My Favorite

Marne has seen hundreds of movies at The County Theater, but WAITING FOR GUFFMAN remains her favorite. She recalls seeing it on a whim during its first theatrical run at The County in 1997, 'I will never forget, I had never heard of it. I saw it during its last week and when I came out I thought this is it. This is the movie of the year. I said to myself, everyone I know needs to see this movie. So as soon as I got home, I got on the phone and called everyone I knew! The last couple of shows had a big crowd, including all my friends from Phillips Mill. There must have been thirty or so of us! It is just wonderful and I have never laughed so much and I have never forgotten it.'
