In collaboration and partnership with Jimmy Stewart’s family, we present this special screening of THE MORTAL STORM alongside an exhibition of the artwork of Stewart’s sister, Mary. The event begins with a Zoom introduction by Kelly Stewart, Jimmy's daughter, and is followed by a Q&A with Stewart's family members.
Produced a full year before America entered into WWII, THE MORTAL STORM is a remarkable and underappreciated anti-fascist drama that was the first studio film to depict the effects of Nazi Germany's oppression. Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan deliver compelling performances as a family living a tranquil life in an Alpine village who find themselves divided after the Nazi regime takes control. This impactful film serves as an early testament to Hollywood's dedication to fighting totalitarianism onscreen and even led Hitler to ban all MGM films in Germany.
About the ANOTHER WONDERFUL LIFE Exhibition:
Artist Mary Stewart’s life intertwined with her famous movie star brother Jimmy Stewart during WWII. After Jimmy became the first Hollywood star to enlist in World War II, Mary Stewart, hoping to do her part, embarked on The War Orphans Series, depicting the horrors of war on the children of Europe where family separations and deportations became the norm.
