Why did I buy that? - Mass Media Marketing and Consumer Behavior

Our Science on Screen series continues with the teen comedy, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS. Before the film starts, Emily Falk, professor of Communication, Psychology, and Marketing at the University of Pennsylvania, will deliver a brief presentation on how advertising in mass media can change behaviors in consumers. Emily’s talk also coincides with the release of her latest book, WHAT WE VALUE. Pre-order your copy from our friends at The Doylestown Bookshop and pick it up at the bookshop before the screening.

The Archie cartoon gets a bubblegum pop makeover! The all-girl punk trio (Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, Rosario Dawson) become an overnight success when the manager of the world’s biggest boy-band signs them to a record deal. After the band learns their label is using their music to brainwash millions of teens into buying products and taking over the world, they risk everything to stop them. Created when the Girl Power Movement was at its peak, TRL was essential viewing, and boy bands were everything, this fun anti-capitalist time capsule from the early 2000s is a blast to revisit on the big screen!

Science on Screen is supported by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, with additional support from Rubin Anders Scientific, and Ken Loveday and Ellen Hoffman, Brookline. Many thanks to our series founder Richard Anders. Co-presented by the Museum of Science.
