This seminal film in the horror genre centers around a group of summer camp counselors trying to reopen the defunct Camp Crystal Lake. When the fresh-faced teens ignore the superstitions of the locals and the camp’s grisly past, they soon find themselves picked off by a brutal unseen killer. Spawning plenty of knockoffs, this first film in this prolific slasher film series is memorable for a campy performance by Betsy Palmer, an early role for Kevin Bacon, and impressive special effects courtesy of Tom Savini. Rated R.
