About the Fashion: Costuming for THE FIFTH ELEMENT was designed by noted French haute couture and "enfant terrible" of the fashion industry, Jean Paul-Gaultier. Gaultier envisioned the fashion of the 23rd century with non-traditional materials such as plexiglass, rubber, and neoprene. Without a doubt, Mila Jovovich’s white bandage style bodysuit is the film’s most iconic look and takes inspiration from Gaultier’s underwear as outerwear collections. The blurring of gender normative fashion is evident in the styles worn by many of the film’s characters, and the representation of futuristic characters with a clear indifference between masculinity and femininity was deemed controversial at the time. The impact of this film is still evident across the fashion world, with notable campaigns and collections still paying homage to THE FIFTH ELEMENT.
