Before Rian Johnson crafted his series of Knives Out films, he made his debut with this neo-noir set in the sun-drenched world of a Southern California high school. Featuring characters spouting hard-boiled dialogue ripped straight from a Hammett novel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a ragged adolescent who gets in over his head when he investigates the murder of his former girlfriend. BRICK is a cleverly conceived and sharply executed spin on a well-worn genre. Rated R.
